Bernie Fuch (1932-2009)

I just got word that one of my greatest heroes of illustrations, Bernie Fuchs, has died.
He was arguably one of the most influential illustrators of the second half of the 20th century and I certainly would not be the painter that I am today without spending tireless hours studying and trying to replicate his paintings as a student (and then beyond).
He was a great inspiration to me and always will be.

Thanks Bernie.

Do yourself a favor and just click the image above, then stare at it for a while.

9

My wife and I had the opportunity to see the premier of this fantastic movie "9". It's an animated feature that happened to be one of the best movies I've seen in A LONG TIME.
If you are reading this, go see this movie in the theater... Then you'll buy it on DVD and never lend it to anyone for fear of never getting it back.

Here's a detail of a painting inspired by the movie:

Go see it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OnoJecu9e7c

note: No burlap was harmed in the publishing of this blog post. Slight fraying, but no harm.

Cover ...back to the drawing board.

So here is the cover of my long awaited book Always Listen to Your Mother... sort of.
Disney decided they'd like me to take the cover in a different direction. So, I'm back to the drawing board. This book is going to be released around Halloween next year so I think I'm going to focus on the neighborhood ghoul, Vlapid for the next round of cover drawings.
I don't mind so much, I just want the book to do well... plus, it's not like Disney doesn't know what they're talking about.

I'm not sure if I'm supposed to be posting this but since they're not using the image, what the heck.

Another Dicey night...

This one is close to being done. I'd like to say that about the other 12, but no worries I'm running out of time so you wont have to read my "Dicey" titles much longer...

"Dicey"... to say the least

13 paintings in 10 days.
I got a good wife.
I think she wants to kill me at this moment, but in a very supportive way.

Just How I Like It

The Tongue Lashing

Here's a piece I'm doing for a short story of a guy reflecting on a confrontation...
For fun, I'll do a different version of this illustration for everyone that submits (via comment) a very short story/dialogue of what could be going on here.

Mama look! A "Slack Jaw'd'Mouth breather!"

This is a composition of the multiple people I witness walking down the street as I drive home from work.
1. Dirty white tee shirt XXXL (like a dress)
2. Pronounced brow.
3. Gaping mouth (aka m' airhol').
4. Oil, lots of oil.
5. Turtle posture if turtle were biped.
6. Expressive hair (not confined to the scalp).
7. Their forward progression is driven from a relentless lean forward, positioning the head far enough in front of the hips to instinctually make the feet respond, falling in front of each other to keep from tipping.

Elfie, our house elf.

This is Elfie, our house elf.
On Thanksgiving Eve he arrives astride Berry (seen here) his mountain goat, all the way from the North Pole. We've been lucky to have had Elfie as our house elf for the last two years. The kids have been very good this year and they hope to see Elfie again this year. He keeps an eye on them from Thanksgiving Eve until Christmas Eve when Santa picks him up in his sleigh. He reports to Santa on a nightly basis. He has a list and is not afraid to use it. During the month of December if the kids are REALY GOOD, Elfie brings them gifts. Sometimes he's not very pleased and the gift box is empty. ooooh, ouch.

Always Listen...

Here is a pic of a project I've been working on with Disney / Hyperion. It's the title page, so imagine text and a pretty title.

The Dashing Apple Core

Here is a model I constructed to illustrate the cover for Please Bury Me in the Library. It's built from the everyday objects: books (obviously), a champagne cork-wire-thingy chair I had sitting around (HaHa... sitting around, chair), and two apple core heads stacked on top of one another... the foot is a mustache of the bottom head.

No joke.

Please Bury Me in the Library - Cover

So with this being my first poke at contributing to a blog I thought I go back a bit and post some book stuff I did a couple year ago. This is a book of children's poetry by J. Patrick Lewis.
